Buying Raid Slots

With the lifting of attunements from all 10-man and 25-man raids, a new dynamic has been popping up among players. Many that don't have the time or guild membership necessary to run some of the most difficult instances in the World of Warcraft are turning to the economy to gear their players up by paying to come along on raids. Many top guilds enjoy the large influx of gold they get by allowing a player or two to tag along on content that they have already mastered to pick up loot that would get disenchanted in any case.

Slots often go for upwards of 6,000 gold for Black Temple or Mount Hyjal raid slots, allowing many of the top guilds to finance consumables and repairs for the more difficult content. As in everything in World of Warcraft, this has lead to many players complaining that people who pay to tag along for a raid haven't really "earned" the loot that they pick up. Regardless, the practice has made some of the most difficult content more accessible to casual players, although it arguably goes against some of Blizzard's intentions for the game.

The use of the "bind on pickup" mechanic was designed to ensure that players who wanted the best loot would actually have to complete the encounters that they dropped from. This acts as a way to encourage players to actually go out and see the dungeons created by the developers rather than just buying it off of the auction house. The player-created compromise between these two systems could lead to further changes in the game, either if Blizzard reacts to the practice or if it continues farther into the future.
