FLYFF, which is an acronym for Fly for Fun, is by far mine and my daughter's favorite interactive role playing online game, and it's absolutely free. Not saying that you don't have the option to put cash on your account to buy items that aren't available to those of us that play for free, but being a single mom the free version is just fine with us.
FLYFF is a game in which everyone starts out as a vagrant, and once you reach level 15 it's time to pick your job. There are four different types of job's you can choose from: a magician, a mercenary, an assist, and an acrobat. Each type of character comes with their own specialized types of weapons, and armor that you can either purchase or receive by defeating monsters.
There's any number of ways you can earn money, which is called penya, in this game. The first way is to defeat monsters, and they generally drop food items, penya, and sometimes armor or weapons. The next way to earn penya is by taking the items you don't need that you received from fighting monsters and trading them for penya with a number of different characters you'll find in town. This is the quickest way to get rid of unwanted items, but not always the most profitable. Another way to unload those unwanted treasures is to trade with other players on line for either items you need or for penya. The most profitable way to earn money is by setting up a shop in town and waiting for other players to buy from your shop, but it requires a lot of patience and is something I don't have. I'd rather be out fighting monsters or doing quests. The final way is by getting quests in town. Each quest either gives you penya or experience upon completion, and some quests give you both. If you do quests with your character it can be a very profitable experience.
Once you've decided what type of job you want it's time to locate the master in your job field, and then they'll require you to do certain tasks to show that you're up to the task of becoming one of them. These tasks aren't generally very hard, but they can be time consuming. But it is in your best interest to choose your task shortly after you've reached level 15, because you can't go any higher than that until you've completed the masters’ tasks.
At this time I myself have three different characters on the server Mushpoie, and my daughter also has three different characters on this server. My characters names are Tinkerbell44 (a level 40 mage), SnowWhite44 (a level 12 that’s going to be an assist), and Angelis44 (a level 1 that is going to be a mercenary). My daughter's characters’ are TinkerBell11 (a level. 39 mage), Cassi (a level. 25 mercenary), and Amber10 (a level 10 that is going to be an assist). Check out FLYFF at http://flyff.gpotato.com, and give us a holler.
